Octaves

The letter of the note higher than G is A. The frequency of the higher A is twice that of the lower A, and we hear that as the same note one octave higher. The musical alphabet ends with G and starts over repeating all of the letter names for notes in the next octave up.

Clefs

Clefs specify the octave of the letter names. The two most common clefs in use today are the bass clef, for lower notes and the treble clef, for higher notes.

Line and Spaces

Long ago, the most common clef was a C clef and was used to identify 'middle C'. For lower notes, musicians began to write an F on the staff to identify the F below middle C, which has become the modern bass clef. The two lines that make the top part of the F would be placed on either side of the line that is F. Today, it is the two dots on the bass clef. From that line, we can find all the other notes.

Similarly, the treble clef, also called a G clef, originated by placing a G on the staffwith the curly circle around the line G. This G indicated the G above middle C. As with the bass clef, once you know one note, you can find the rest.

Bass Clef

The bass clef is used for low notes. Given that the line between the dots is F, it follows that the letters lay on the staff as pictured below. Notice that space 1 of the bass clef is A,with the notes ascending the alphabet from there.

bass clef letter names A-G

A skilled musician immediately knows the alphabet letter of any note that they see. As you build your skills, it helps to have a couple shortcuts and mnemonic devices. Separating the line notes from the space notes can be very helpful:

The spaces of the bass clef spell ‘Ace G’, you might remember this with the phrase ‘All Cows Eat Grass’.

The line notes are shown below. A mnemonic phrase to remember these notes is ‘Good Burritos Don’t Fall Aapart’.

Treble Clef

The treble clef is used for high notes. Given that the swirl of the treble clef identifies line G, it follows that the letters lay on the staff as pictured below. Notice that space 2 of the treble clef is A, with the notes ascending the alphabet from there.

The spaces of the treble clef spell ‘FACE’.

A phrase to remember the line notes is ‘Every Good Bird Does Fly’.
